Chris Phillips sent these pictures of some of his finds.

The eagle button is from a Confederate Staff Officer. I dug it in the back yard of an old antebellum home here in the upstate. This one caught me by surprise, a nice surprise.

The collection of yankee and confederate bullets and percussion caps were dug in northwest Georgia at the place of the battle of Rocky Face Ridge and the surrounding area. The yankee Wisconsin button was dug at Chattanooga near the Chickamauga battlefield, (on private property!).

The bullet I'm pictured holding in my hand was dug during a trip with Randy down near Edisto, SC. I had never before seen one like this and would like help in identifying it. What I found different about it is that it has a flat base and all the minie ball type bullets that I had dug before had a hollow base.

Here is a article from our 1991 December newsletter written by Ray Hunt..

Treasure Found

A story concerning the real meaning of Christmas.

We all love to here stories of treasures sought for and especially those that have been found. Man has always searched for that which he considers to be of special value and the wise men in the book of Matthew were no different. most scholars of the bible believe the men to have been early astronomers from ancient Persia who somehow related the signs in the positioning of the planets and stars with the old testament prophesies of the coming of Christ. Some believe that they may have journeyed as much as two years before finally reaching Bethlehem where they found the young christ child, worshipped him , and presented him with treasures of gold, frankincense and myrrh. one can only imagine the joy they experienced at finding such a sought for treasure that they beheld.

John 3:16 says, For god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

While many of the treasures of life that we seek for may be quite elusive, this is one that we can all find. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Mark 8:36 Those who seek and find him today can be equated with the magic of old in that they are truly wise men!

I would like to welcome everyone to the SCTAA Club Blog. I will try to post information each month about our meetings and activities. I need all the help I can get so please give me suggestions and stories to use in our club blog. I also would encourage you to become an author and start your own personal blog and tell us about your metal detecting trips and your thoughts on anything else that you would like to share with us.

I will be posting some of our old newsletters if anyone is interested in reading them. The graphics may not show up because of software changes. I have also started a club Photo Album on Kodak.com. If anyone has any pictures they would like to add, E-mail them to me and I will upload them.

This year is our 18th anniversary and I think we have come a long way. A lot of friends have been made with lots of fun and some great finds.

Just a reminder that hunting season is approaching here in South Carolina and it would be a good idea to stay away from these areas and not interfere with the hunters since their season is so short and to keep from getting shot.

We had a good turn-out at our club hunt Saturday. The weather was beautiful, it did get a little cool for a while but over all it was great. There were about 32 present and 22 hunters.

Our first hunt was the Poker Hunt. We started hunting at 10:15 and hunted about 30 minutes. Tyrone won this hunt with 3 Kings. Tyrone also found a card from last years Poker Hunt. We would like to thank Dan & Brenda for sponsoring this hunt.

After the first hunt we had lunch with some great tasting hot dogs, beans, pasta salad and some good looking deserts.

Our second hunt (Token Hunt) started a 1:00 and lasted 45 minutes. It was silver dimes, silver quarters, silver half & tokens. All of the tokens were found except for one. I found a little treasure chest filled with dimes and a note for a special prize (Eisenhower dollar, two Susan B. Anthony’s and four Kennedy half’s.) planted by Dan & Brenda. Thanks.

We would like to thank all who donated coins and prizes and for everyone who brought and prepared the food. Thanks to Tyrone for getting the beach and preparing the field and planting the coins. Thanks to Randy for all the work that went into this hunt and for planting the tokens.

Let’s get started early! Start thinking about next years hunt and if anyone has any ideas or suggestion let Randy
know.

Donnie

Breakfast Club

As usual most all my excursions begin with the Breakfast Club at Hardees, McDonalds or café in the areas I have planned to hunt. A few weeks ago while downing the energy for the day’s hunt I could here several conversations going on. Nothing really interesting until an older gentlemen asked if the new owners of the old Presbyterian Church were going to tear it down. The response to his question was no, they were just beginning to renovate it.  I am all ears now and ready for more information. Sure enough several gentlemen sitting close by joined the conversation. In approximately the time it would take to get your detector in the car I had found out a few of the activities that had taken place both inside and out, how old the building was, what it was used for and what was it going to become. Where is it? Who are the new owners? Would you like to join? Before I forget it was built in 1880!

Directions Given, Thank You, I hunt old coins with a metal detector, sounds like a good place to find some. Several agreed. Wonder who you would need to see about getting permission to get on the property? Me I’m the care taker and the new owners are from out of town. Permission granted along with some other leads that I will follow up on at a later date.

You also can pick up leads this way. Seat yourself with the breakfast club, don’t sit in the deserted area all by yourself say good morning and start eating. It’s easy to listen this way. Sure sometimes nothing of interest is being discussed. That’s when you mention your hobby and ask a few questions. Keep in mind these people live in the area and have a lot of information that you won’t find in any library or book. Remember you found something of importance in your research or you would not be in the area to begin with. Why not add the breakfast club along with your research. You’ll be glad you did.

Great

My friend Jimmy and I decided that we would go on a day trip to Charleston SC to hunt the beach with our metal detectors at the Isle of Palms on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. We invited our wives Teresa & Terri to go along for the ride. Terri and I met Jimmy & Teresa at their home around 6:30am for the trip. After a short stop for breakfast we were on our way for a day of fun.

We arrived in Charleston at about 10:30 and took Teresa & Terri downtown to the Market. Armed with cash and debit cards they were off to their own treasure hunt.

We agreed to pick them up at 5:30 and have dinner before heading home.

We finally arrived at the County Park paid our $5 all day parking fee and entered the beach through the park. We decided to go right under the pier and hunt in front of the hotels. This was my first trip here and I was surprised that the beach was so wide. I turned on my Minelab Explorer and started hunting the waters edge and it seemed like a half hour before I found my first coin a corroded zinc penny. I hunted for another hour and half finding only the occasional coin and pull tab.

I decided to go back over and hunt in front of the county park. This side was packed with lots sunbathers making it a little hard to hunt. My first find there was a silver skull ring at about two inches deep. I hunted for about ½ hr here finding only a few coins. Jimmy showed up and we decided to go back to the other side and hunt toward the local grill for a burger. I was ready for a break.

After lunch we started hunting the beach just past the hotels in front of the condos. We were digging more coins here that were older and deeper. I received a signal that sounded like a pull tab. I removed one scoop of sand and I could see part of a silver chain. I gently pull it and out popped a three diamond pendant. After a closer look I could tell that it was not real diamonds. Just my luck. I found about 40 coins in all and Jimmy found about the same number of coins and a silver ring with his Fisher CZ-6.  We hunted until 4:00 or a little after and figured it was time to go find our wives.

After we picked up our wives and finished showing them our finds. Terri said look at this ring that I found on the sidewalk. An emerald ring with 8 little diamonds. Better than any thing that Jimmy and I found. Go figure.

Next hunt local State Park swimming beach.
