Plaster has fallen from the ceiling in chunks. Holes have rotted in the wooden floor. Window panes have been broken, replaced and broken again.
Historian Ted Key stood in the cold house by the blackened fire place.
“This is a sacred place. Americans died here. Americans from the North and South were brought here and died here,” he said. “We can’t lose this. We have to save this and it was almost destroyed.”
